Radical Philosophy Obituary

Joseph McCarney taught philosophy at South Bank University. He wrote three books: The Real World of Ideology (Harvester, 1980); Social Theory and the Crisis of Marxism (Verso,1990); Hegel on History (Routledge, 2000). The first two of these are presented here. He also wrote numerous articles of which two are presented here.
At the time of his death his main intellectual interest was the Hegel-Marx relationship. He believed that although a very great deal has been written on this subject we are still far from having any secure understanding of it and it represents a most fertile field for inquiry.
